Donegal Town Credit Union management and staff were delighted to welcome 1st year Business Studies students to the Credit Union for a tour. Manager of Donegal Town Credit Union Liam Kelly said “it was a pleasure to welcome students from the AVS to Donegal Town Credit Union providing them with a wonderful opportunity to see first hand how the Credit Union works”. Mr. Kelly also expressed his thanks to the students, teachers, staff and everyone involved in making this visit possible.

Students were divided into 3 groups with each group assigned a guide to take them around the building. The visit was broken into 3 parts, with the groups alternating between each:

  1. Board Room

Situated on the top floor of the building. Our Chairman Patsy Barr explained the structure of the board and its responsibilities including the governance of the Credit Union. All board members are volunteers. Management and staff are responsible for the day to day operations in the office and reporting back to the board. The students learned how the various committees reported to the board meeting held each month and were given an example of the standing items on the monthly agenda. Patsy also outlined the regulations of the Central Bank to which we must adhere.

  1. Office Visit

During this visit students were learned about the common bond structure. Donegal Town Credit Union’s common bond goes as far as Brenter in Inver, Ballintra in Drumholm and out to Barnesmore Gap.  All members must be able to prove that they live or work within these areas to hold membership within Donegal Town Credit Union. Their guide also discussed the special rate student loans that are available from Donegal Town Credit Union to members.

  1. Teller Station

The students got to see how transactions were carried out behind the counter. Observing both a lodgement and a withdrawal from an account. They got to see how the cash machine worked and thought it was great how safe and secure the process was. The teller informed them of the benefits of being a credit union member:

  • You are part of a community run credit union that is owned by its members
  • We are open 6 days a week Mon – Sat
  • We have flexi accounts which allow you to lodge your funds electronically into the credit union.
  • The credit union app which is available to members – CU247
